As some of you know, my brother, Dan Sheldon, always looked forward to attending his class reunions and seeing everyone.

My sister, Pat, and I had the "privilege" to be with him when he passed away on March 25, 2012, at his home.  I noticed he had the last reunion information card that was sent in February sitting next to his calendar.  I think he really thought he would make it to the 50th.  He so wanted to live.  I think Dan said it best in his obituary that he wrote himself about not going gently into the night.  Trust me, he did not go gently.  He fought valiantly until the last 2 days of his life when he was finally at peace and painfree (thanks to the wonderful Hospice nurses).  We love you Dan.

Obituary

Dan M. Sheldon Resident of Livermore

Dan passed away Sunday, March 25, 2012, after staging a brilliant fight with cancer, but the grim reaper bested him.

Dan was born in Ypsilanit, Michigan in 1944 and joined the United States Air Force in 1965 and served as an Aero Medical Specialist during the Viet Nam conflict.  He was discharged from the USAF in 1969 in California where he made his home.  He entered Sacramento State University where he earned a degree in Biological Sciences and Chemistry.  He worked in various Bay Area hospitals as a Medical Technologist for years and then gravitated to the Biotech world where he worked for the last 30 years.  He was employed by Xoma, Chiron and finally, Genentech.

For sports, he enjoyed water and snow skiing, racquetball and handball, running, volleyball, golf and tennis and pumping iron.  He was an avid philatelist and numismatist and, in general junk collector.  He enjoyed maintaining and driving his 1974 Triumph TR6 in its original condition.

He is survived by his loving wife of 29 years, Barbara, his sister Patricia of Tucson, Arizona, sister Sue of Gladwin, Michigan, one niece, Bryn, of Tucson, Arizona as well as a great-nephew, Alex of Perry, Michigan.

He was cremated and his ashes will be buried near his father and mother in Michigan.

"Whatever limits us, we call Fate"  "Do not go gentle in the dark night"  "Rage, Rage against the dying of the light"

Services were held Wednesday, March 28, 2012, at 1:00 PM at Callaghan Mortuary in Livermore, California.

I have not been able to write Dan until now.  He and I  reunited as friends at our 20th class reunion.  We communicated over the next 30 years. I thought, and of course  hoped, it would beat his cancer, but alas, it took him before he was prepared.  I was so certain I would see him at the reunion which just ended yesterday at Larry Doe's home on Huron Lake.  For Barbara, I know how special Dan was and how he loved and cherished his marriage to you.  As a friend, he was the best.

My condolences to Dan's family!
